Harry Potter Wands (Or Fairy Wands if Harry Potter is not your thing)
Harry Potter is without a doubt, my favorite book series. As a young tween, my mom came up with the idea of making a wizarding world wand for myself. (I didn't know that collector's wands existed yet. I am now the proud owner of a genuine Olivander's Hermione Granger wand.) Whether for a Halloween costume or just because you want your very own wand, here is how you can make a wooden wizarding (or fairy) wand.
What You Will Need:
A Wooden Branch from a Near by Tree, About the Length of Your Forearm.
(For fun, you can look up different types of trees to find the one that best matches your personality. For example, I relate very much to either Maple or Pine because of the flexibility and frailty.)
Whittling or Pocket Knife
Optional Wood Stain, Glitter, Ribbon, etc.
Step One
Whittle at the branch using your whittling/pocket knife, until it is to the desired shape and size. If you wish it to be more natural, as it is in the Harry Potter series, whittle with the natural shapes of the branch. Allow the knots and other interesting parts of the branch to show.
Safety tip - Don't forget to whittle away from your body, it can be dangerous if this rule is forgotten.
Step Two
Rub your sandpaper all over your wand so that splinters won't be a problem when holding your wand. Once again, for a natural look, go with the grain of the branch.
Step Three Crafting Options
If you want your wand to be a rustic color, take a wood stain and stain your wand to the desired color. If you do not stain, it is vital that you rub a type of oil or bee's wax all over the wand to protect your wand from becoming brittle. You can also choose the option of painting it.
If you wish, decorate your wand with ribbons, glitter, or whatever your heart desires. My first wand was not stained, but I did tie a red ribbon around it for my own personal touch.
Now you have your very own Harry Potter Wizarding Wand. Enjoy your "magical adventures!"
